Where Are the Robots Taking Us? Part 1

"Robots that are affordable companions and operate largely independent of the owner could be a huge initial benefit to people who are disabled," Rob Enderle, principal analyst of the Enderle Group, pointed out. "This may turn out to be one of the biggest things this century, much as affordable cars and affordable computers were in the last century," he told TechNewsWorld...

Will Office 2010 Shred Google Docs?

Despite the improvements, Google will remain the underdog in the office apps space for now. "Google's more of a nuisance at the moment," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told the E-Commerce Times. "It hasn't stepped up to being a real competitor yet." Googl...

Technologies That Could Define the Next Century

I'm writing this from the Volkswagen/Audi event at Stanford University in California where the German Chancellor is presenting the first robotic car designed to race, without a driver, up Pikes Peak. The event is to open the Whale; the Stanford Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Laboratory, which, somewhat sadly, came shortly after NUMMI, the last California car manufacturing site was closed. Earlier this month, I was at HP Labs and saw technology that could vastly alter how we build cities and how we create personal electronics -- as well as a potential iPad killer, being developed initially for the U.S. government, which isn't a tablet. ...

Google Dreams Up Cloud Printing Service

The service could save the printer industry, Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld. "With e-books and tablets coming in, printing on paper is on the way out, but the more Web-capable printers are, the longer they'll be around," he explained. "Making printers Web-capable would be a good defensive move by the printer vendors."

Labor Report Blasts Conditions at MS Supplier Factory

While United States laws mandate that U.S. companies impose strict requirements on overseas suppliers, the burden of enforcement often falls on the state and not the company, said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group "The companies can apply penalties, but they ...

Microsoft Targets Teens With Social-Climbing Phone

"With the Kin, Microsoft has pulled an Apple and created something that is incredibly easy to use and doesn't try to compete on the sheer number of features it has," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld "This is a device for folks who want a ...

Whitman and Fiorina: Why Tech CEOs Don’t Have a Chance in Politics

I seem to be getting an increasing number of calls asking me whether Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina have a chance as a governor or a U.S. senator respectively. Both are uniquely capable, and both have histories that suggest good management skills that would be critical in California -- a state that desperately needs them. ...

Google Earth Helps Scientists Unearth Possible Human Ancestor

"Any time you instrument something as deeply as Google Earth does, there's a chance somebody remotely viewing that offering will see something nobody else has seen," Rob Enderle, president and principal analyst with the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld. "It does open a relatively significant window to new discoveries."

Will Microsoft Look Pretty in Pink?

"Historically, Microsoft has had problems with OEMs building handsets that properly showcased its operating system," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told the E-Commerce Times. "Project Pink was designed to address that problem." Greater involvement by the ...

Cities of the Future, Part 3: Cloud Quandaries

"People would have to file a complaint and wait indefinitely for someone to get back to them," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld. To minimize the incidence of such problems, city planners and their computer vendors would need to anticip...

T-Mobile Offers Fat Trade-In Credits to Switch From iPhone to HD2

That is hardly a deal killer, said Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group, who maintained that "of all the Windows Mobile phones, version 6.5 is the best." As for the HD2, it is an excellent high-end device that could easily rival the iPhone, depending on the user's needs, he told ...

The iPad Launched and the World Didn’t End

Last week was one hell of a week. We had the formal launch of the Core Wars between Intel and AMD, and a little product called the "iPad" entered the market. My biggest concern, thanks to the Lifeboat Foundation, was the Hadron Collider and whether I'd even wake up today. (Since you are reading this, I'm assuming we woke up today.) Thank goodness much of the related news had to do with April 1st pranks. ...

Intel, Nokia Hold Their Breath as Devs Start Noodling With MeeGo

"Samsung and Panasonic recently looked at MeeGo and said 'No thanks,' and without a compelling product in the market running MeeGo, the consumer won't even get the opportunity to buy it," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told LinuxInsider MeeGo may also ha...

Nervous Amazon Knuckles Under on E-Book Pricing

All bets might be off if Amazon were to ramp up its marketing with the next generation of the Kindle -- a device that may be very close in functionality to the iPad, according to Rob Enderle, principal of the Enderle Group. "Amazon is the largest e-tailer in the U.S., but it ...

AMD Aims to Regain Its Mojo

If AMD can capture that market share before Intel gets out of the gate, it could score a big win and move into a position to recapture much of the market share it lost after the delay of Barcelona, analyst Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group told the E-Commerce Times "Intel remai...

Cities of the Future, Part 2: Building a Central Civic Nervous System

Of course, more data won't help if it's not properly used, pointed out Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group. "This assumes that the data is used effectively, which, given that cities rarely use data effectively, is a bit of a stretch," he told TechNewsWorld. It...

Latest Swiss Army Knife Boasts Super-Secure Storage Stick

Is this level of safety really necessary? "It is, if you're worried about people cutting off your fingers to gain access to things," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld. Bad guys who snatch or steal the Victorinox USB stick also won't be ab...

Bing’s New Bells and Whistles Could Leave Searchers’ Heads Ringing

If Microsoft is going to make Bing more feature-rich, it has to make sure it also doesn't get in its own way. Schwartz trumpeted the desire for Bing to provide a "lighter, cleaner presentation" and to "streamline and polish" the user experience. However, Rob Enderle president and principal analyst of the Enderle Group, says that hasn't been Microsoft's experience...

Intel, HP and DreamWorks: Training Dragons

I've seen some amazingly great movies in the last few weeks. I was at Disney World to see "Alice in Wonderland" in IMAX 3-D and watching that movie on a Disney property for this ex-Disney employee was truly magical. Last week, I was at DreamWorks to see "How to Train Your Dragon," and the movie engaged me heart and mind in what was also a magical experience. It is amazing how far we have come, but DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg, who spoke to us for awhile, along with a presentation by PhaseSpace, showcased that future films could not only be even more amazing, but also be made for less -- and more often. This last is largely due to technology from companies like HP and Intel, which is what I'll focus on this week. ...

Publishers Put Pricey Premiums on iPad Content

"I think Dow Jones is developing a premium service, and that has a premium price associated with it," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told the E-Commerce Times. Premium indeed -- apparently, Wired, published by Conde Nast, is offering advertisers that buy...
